How do we collect historical data?

Provide the current address of the building (e.g., Didžioji g. 5) or its coordinates (X, Y format).
Provide the historical address of the building (e.g., Didžioji g. 5; ul. Zamkowa 3; Dominikaner str. 16).
Present the source of information or attach a digital image of the source.
If possible, provide 2-3 paragraphs of additional information (e.g., history of the building).

All information in the “Adresų istorija” map must be referenced to the sources. Please use the notes and bibliography method of the Chicago-style citation when formatting the references. You can find more information about the citation method here.

The “Adresų istorija” map is developed voluntarily, and we expect all people involved to be responsible, honest, and committed to their engagements. At the same time, we understand that plans change, so we hope our volunteers will communicate openly and directly, as we also promise to do.

Involvement in this project can be formalized as an internship or official volunteering. We can arrange individual assignments to correspond to your professional activities or the topic of your coursework or thesis.

Can I use the website's data on other platforms?

You can use the data for academic and educational purposes but must follow the specified source citation rules.

How do I search for an old address?

The map shows a modern city plan with current addresses. To find an address you are interested in, just type it into the search box. By clicking on the address, you’ll open a card showing the buildings’ addresses from different time periods and links to sources that support this information. You can also browse the map freely, clicking on the markers that indicate buildings with information about their old addresses.

How long will it take for an address to appear on the map?

If the references to the sources are legitimate and available online, the information about the old address can appear within a few working days. If the sources aren’t available online, it may take longer to check the information, depending on the availability of the sources.

How to evaluate sources?

Some historical sources are more accurate than others because of their purpose or nature. So, we encourage you to rely on the most reliable sources whenever possible.

The most reliable sources (primary sources):

Historical maps (Lithuanian archives, libraries, LIMIS digital archive).
Official lists of addresses (The Centre of Registers, Vilnius Municipality data).
Archival documents (notarial deeds, municipal resolutions on street renaming).
Photographs (authentic, with references to the context).
Old telephone and address books.

Sources requiring further verification:

Academic articles and monographs about Vilnius urban planning.
Journalistic and historical publications about the city’s history.
Historical reports (from municipal, restorational, or archaeological research).
Letters and postal items (only as additional sources).

Memories of the residents.
Internet forums, blogs.

I found the historical address in more than one source. What to do?

If you have identified the historical address in more than one source, please provide all the relevant sources.
Please keep in mind that if the source is in both analog (e.g., a book) and digital (e.g., a book has been digitized and uploaded to the e-Paveldas system) form, we prefer a digital source because it’s easier to access and verify its information.

I’ve used my personal archive. How will you verify information?

If you have identified the historical address in a personal archive (e.g., personal letters, photographs, postcards, etc.), please attach a digital image of the source and briefly describe its context. We are committed to academic accuracy and aim to verify all information before it appears on the map. The images of your personal archive won’t be used for any other purpose.

Who uploads information to the map?

The map’s co-creators provide data and links to the sources, which the project team checks and verifies. Once the data is verified, the project team uploads the information to the map.


